Running

The Copper Canyon area is known for running and is a great destination for running experiences for several reasons.

The Tarahumara Indians

The Tarahumara people populate the canyon areas...the only real Indian survivors of the Spanish.

The Tarahumaras are everywhere in the canyons we call Copper Canyon, but they are sometimes unseen. On many occasions I have been with groups when we see one of them running …and it is a sight to see. They are the masters of a fluid barefoot style that gives them an endurance edge. Men and women both excel at running and even little kids can be seen flying along through the woods.

Born to Run

This bestseller book put the Copper Canyon area and the Tarahumaras on the map. Christopher McDougall put it all together in terms of the culture, the history, the barefoot shtick- and it is a great read!

By the way if you want to know how to lace a hurachi, see this video.

And here are some pics:

The Copper Canyon Ultramarathon

Runner’s World and other running pubs have written about this incredible event.

The eccentric Caballo Blanco has become the champion of this 54 mile brutal run every spring. Runners “with sand” flock to the tiny village of Urique each March to put their feet and lungs and hearts up against others including the Tarahumara. This year’s endurance run is March 6, 2011.

The Terrain and Altitude

This picture says it……..hugely rugged!

Copper Canyon is wild and rough...some of the toughest trail running on the planet.

The Copper Canyon Train and the Culture

This is a great place to go for running because the train is enchanting and the overall culture gives people a taste of old Mexico that is almost lost in the popular resort scene around Mexico.

CHEPE is one of the world's great railways and a fascinating ride.

We can put together running trips for you or your running club.

The options for a Copper Canyon running trip are many and can include overnight trips, hotel based running experiences, going on the trails with Tarahumaras, including the Copper Canton Ultramarathon and more.
